Travelling With a Crypto Card

For paying, a card funded with crypto behaves like any other card. For deposits, it meets a procedure written before anyone thought about them.

Abroad, a crypto-funded card is simply a card. Terminals do not know how the balance got there and cannot ask. Restaurants, shops, taxis, tickets — all of it works the way any card works.

Two situations are different, and they are the two most likely to matter on a trip: a hotel taking a deposit at check-in, and a car hire desk. Both involve a hold rather than a payment, and holds behave differently.

What a hold actually is

A hold is not a charge. The hotel asks your card to reserve an amount against possible extras, and that amount becomes unavailable to you without ever leaving. When you check out and pay, the hold is released.

The catch is the release. It is not instant — it commonly takes several days and occasionally longer, because the release travels back through the same chain of intermediaries as the original request.

So the practical problem is not that a hold costs money. It is that it makes money unavailable at the exact moment you are travelling and want to spend it.

Car hire is the strict one

Hotels vary; car hire is consistent, and consistently the hardest case. Most firms require a physical card, in the main driver's name, presented at the desk, with enough available balance to cover a deposit that frequently runs into four figures.

Prepaid cards are also refused outright by many firms as a matter of policy, regardless of the balance on them, because their contract assumes a card they can charge again later.

This is worth checking with the specific firm before you book, not on arrival. It is the one situation on this page where being wrong ruins the day rather than costing a small amount.

What to expect

The pattern is consistent: paying is easy, being held against is where friction lives. Virtual card vs physical card sets out the same line in more detail.

The screen that costs the most

Every terminal and every cash machine abroad will at some point offer to charge you in your home currency rather than the local one. Shops do it too, and there it is usually a button the assistant presses without mentioning it.

Decline it. That is dynamic currency conversion, and the rate belongs to the merchant or the machine operator — typically several percent worse than the market rate. Over a week of holiday spending it dwarfs every other cost discussed here.

Always local currency. If a receipt shows your home currency when you did not choose it, you can ask for it to be redone.

Before you go

  1. Top up more than the trip needs Holds make part of the balance unavailable for days. A margin above what you plan to spend keeps a hold from stopping the next payment.
  2. Use a stablecoin for the top-up You want the amount you sent to be the amount that arrives, especially the day before a flight — which crypto to top up with explains the difference.
  3. Take the physical card if the trip has a desk in it Hotels and car hire want plastic. If the trip is only flights and restaurants, the phone wallet is enough.
  4. Ask the car hire firm directly Not the booking site. The firm, about your specific card, before you pay for anything.
  5. Have a second way to pay Not because this card is unreliable, but because one card of any kind is a single point of failure a thousand miles from home.

Common questions

It works wherever the network is accepted, which is 180+ countries. Where it will not work is anywhere under sanctions — that is a legal restriction, not a technical one.

Usually a few days after checkout, sometimes longer. The hotel releases it immediately; the delay is in the chain between them and us.

No. The card has to be in the main driver's name — this is close to universal across firms.

No need. Spending abroad is expected and is not treated as suspicious on its own.

Check the balance covers the amount plus any hold, then try a different terminal. If it persists, write to [email protected] — but check the currency screen first, because a declined conversion looks like a declined card.
